Vanilla Sky

and Cameron Diaz might want to think twice before reuniting for another film.

The stars of the box office disappointment Knight and Day are now being reminded of another title from their past.

According to a poll conducted by LoveFilm, 2001’s Vanilla Sky is considered the most confusing movie ever made. The surreal Cameron Crowe film - also starring Cruise’s ex-girlfriend - centered on a wealthy publishing heir (Cruise) who suffers from a series of strange hallucinations after a car accident.

David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive ranked second in the poll while Donnie Darko, directed by Richard Kelly, placed third.

Although the Jim Carrey film didn’t come close to its reported $180 million budget, Carol still has weeks to go before Avatar takes over 3D screens.

Cameron Diaz’s Role as Director’s Mother

The Box

hung out with her director’s parents to prepare for a movie role.

The actress says that her character Norma in The Box was based so closely on filmmaker Richard Kelly’s mother, she decided the best way to work on her accent and mannerisms was to spend time with her.

“Norma and her husband Arthur (played by ) were literally based on Richard’s parents. His father did exactly the same job as Arthur and Norma has the same disfigurement of the foot his mother had. The film’s his interpretation of their love story and their dedication to one another,” she explained. “I spent time with both his parents. His mother was very generous with her experience about how her foot became disfigured and the way it happened for her was in the story. I also did her accent, she’s from northern Texas and spent time in Virginia so she had a mutated accent, so there was a lot there to get into that was tangible for me.”

Donnie Darko Sequel Begins Filming

S. Darko PosterIn unfortunate sequel news, newbie director Chris Fisher (Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, Nightstalker) has taken on the S. Darko project, the follow-up to Richard Kelly’s cult classic Donnie Darko. Production began today in Los Angeles.

Fox has, for unclear reasons, picked up this sequel, which focuses primarily on Samantha Darko’s road trip to Los Angeles with her friend. Along the way, they are haunted by mysterious visions marked by meteorites and rabbits. Samantha is, of course, the younger sister of Donnie’s (the irksome dancer in Sparkle Motion) and will be 18 years old in the film, apparently now a troubled teen in a broken home.

Daveigh Chase is so far the only original cast member reprising her role as Samantha. Newcomer Briana Evigan (Step Up 2: The Streets), Gossip Girl‘s Ed Westwick, and Dragonball Z star Justin Chatwin have also signed on for this awful production.

Apparently the film’s sales group, Velvet Octopus, is expecting the film to become a box office favorite once it hits theaters in 2009. If anyone truly appreciates Richard Kelly’s masterpiece, they will opt not to see this flagrant movie next year.
