Box Office Breakdown: Chance of Meatballs is Winning Recipe

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

While it may not have had a Damon, an Aniston or a Fox, had something no other film did this weekend: a win. The animated adaptation raked in $30.3 million over the weekend easily pushing it to the top of the charts. The PG-rated entry towered over the box office and nearly tripled its nearest competitor (The Informant). The 3-D film also gave Sony Pictures Animation its biggest debut to date.

Elsewhere, two Hollywood beauties were struggling to make a respectable showing. Despite (or because of) a number of notable quotes, Megan Fox failed to muster any interest in her first starring vehicle. Jennifer’s Body, a horror film penned by Diablo Cody, raised a whopping $6.9 million for a fifth-place finish. (I’m not even sure that would be enough to fund one day of a Transformers production.) Megan Fox might not be a fan of Michael Bay, but she better be grateful she met him.

Box Office Breakdown: Tyler Perry Can Win All By Himself

I Can Do Bad By Myself

Leave it to Tyler Perry to take on the horror industry.

The actor/writer/director’s latest film, , earned $23.4 million over the weekend—enough to stop The Final Destination from taking its third crown in a row. The urban comedy, starring Taraji P. Henson and Mary J. Blige, more than doubled its nearest competitor since opening Friday and gave Perry his third biggest debut to date.

I Can Do Bad also topped , the newest scare flick to enter the scene. Although the movie boasts more recognizable names (Audrina Patridge, Rumer Willis) than Destination, the R-rater barely scraped up $5.1 million for a 6th place finish.

Baking Buff Rumer Willis

Rumer Willis and mother Demi MooreNewly turned 21-year-old Rumer Willis would much rather bide her time making pies than doing the Hollywood scene.

The Sorority Row actress, who is the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, can’t resist her cravings for sugary baked goods, so she spends her free time in the kitchen.

“I just don’t care about fame. I have better things to do—like making pies. I love making pies. It all started when I went on a road trip with my boyfriend. We stopped off at this diner and had this strawberry and rhubarb pie, and I thought, ‘This is incredible. I’m going to learn how to make it.’ So I did.”

Rumer is so accomplished at baking, she even treats Demi and her stepfather Ashton Kutcher to their favorite pies.

“My mom likes either pecan pie or German chocolate, and I just made a coconut banana cream pie for Ashton. He liked that very much. It was gone in a matter of three days.”

Sorority Row and Destination Mark Reemergence of Bad Teen Horror

As much as raping Asian horror films like The Eye and One Missed Call irked me, I’m fairly sure that Sorority Row and The Final Destination (trailer after the jump) are leaving me even more distressed at the fate of American horror.

By the looks of the trailer, the remake of 1983’s The House on Sorority Row strikes me as a bad mix of I Know What You Did Last Summer and The House Bunny (seriously, what is Rumer Willis‘s character from that film doing in this one?). I’m happy to see Carrie Fisher get work, although I find it disheartening that the only gig she can get is this egregiously-looking thriller. Then again, this is a Summit production…

Box Office Breakdown: Burn After Reading Smokes Past Competition

Burn After Reading

Around this same time last year, Tyler Perry was beating George Clooney in a battle at the box office. Now the Sexiest Man Alive is having his day.

This past weekend, cineplexes were kept busy with a handful of new releases. Although each film had a chance of reaching #1, - starring Clooney, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand - emerged as the eventual winner. But the news wasn’t so bad for the other three contenders. Theatergoers clearly starving for fresh material placed all four wide release entries into the chart’s four top slots.

Box Office Breakdown: Bangkok Dangerous Tops Dismal Weekend

Bangkok Dangerous

Eek. And I thought a $14 million weekend was bad.

Seven days ago, Tropic Thunder reached the #1 spot despite an unimpressive box office turnout. This week, accomplished that same achievement—with only $7.7 million dollars.

While number crunchers weren’t expecting stellar numbers (kids are back in school, football’s back gone), the underwhelming response to ‘s latest film was a bit surprising. Not only did the film industry have its worst weekend of 2008, Bangkok had the lowest take for any first-placed flick in five years. (Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star topped with $6.6 million in 2003.)

Box Office Breakdown: Tropic Thunder Makes It Three for Three

Disaster Movie

At any other time of the year, a $14 million take would probably get you a decent ranking in the Top Ten. This holiday weekend, that box office total was enough to put into first place. Again.

Despite a new Vin Diesel entry, the Ben Stiller comedy led the top of the pack for the third weekend in a row. (If it reaches that mark a fourth time, it will have officially reached Dark Knight territory.) Meanwhile, Babylon A.D. settled for second place with only $11.5 million in ticket sales. I’m guessing the sci fi film’s reviews - in particular, the one from the movie’s own director - might have had something to do with the disappointing turnout.

Box Office Breakdown: Tropic Thunder Wins the Death Race

Jason Statham in Death Race

Although it was widely believed that (hunky) Jason Statham would emerge as this weekend’s winner, somehow managed to hold its ground. The comedy, which only raked in $16.2 million during this outing, became the third movie this year to make a repeat appearance at #1. (The other two films were those giant blockbusters called Iron Man and The Dark Knight.)

Overall, this was an unimpressive weekend for films. Theatergoers probably confused (like me) by Joan Allen’s participation only poured $12.6 million of their dollars into . Meanwhile, The House Bunny became this week’s highest-grossing chick alternative (Sorry, Sisterhood!) with its $14.5 million gross.
