Sequel News: The Hobbit, Wimpy Kid and More

The Hobbit: Guillermo Del Toro’s exit from The Hobbit doesn’t necessarily mean an end for the prequels. Lord of the Rings’ Peter Jackson is now in talks to serve as both producer and director. It’s still hoped the two films can be released in 2012 and 2013.

Box Office Breakdown: A-Team’s Face Kicked by Karate Kid’s Foot

Jaden Smith in The Karate Kid

The battle of the ‘80s remakes was won by an actor born in 1998.

Despite featuring no actual karate and a Smith named Jaden, had no problem kicking up Will Smith-esque dollars this weekend. (I’m sure it had something to do with that Justin Bieber song.).  Sony’s remake of the 1984 classic surpassed early projections by rallying to a $55.7 million finish. The film’s debut means the 11-year-old star has already managed to outperform most of his father’s films. (I Am Legend opened to $77.2 million in 2007; Hancock premiered to $62.6 million in 2008.)

Meanwhile, Fox’s reboot of cranked out what could be considered a B-grade performance. The movie, which cost over $95 million to make (compared to Karate‘s $40 million), only rang up $25.7 million in its first three days. That’s barely above the figure Liam Neeson’s Taken earned in 2009 ($24.7 million) and nowhere near the debut Bradley Cooper and Jessica Biel had with Valentine’s Day ($56.2 million).

Box Office Breakdown: Audiences Get to the Greek…and Shrek

Get Him to the Greek

Ashton Kutcher may have more Twitter followers than Diddy and Russell Brand combined - but that achievement wasn’t reflected at the box office this weekend.

Despite pirating the first 13 minutes of Killers, Kutcher was unable to generate enough interest to earn more than third place. The film - Katherine Heigl’s first since leaving Grey’s Anatomy - only rounded up a mere $15.8 million. (In other words, Ashton got about $3 from each of his Tweeps.)

Box Office Breakdown: Theatergoers Choose Shrek Over Sex

Sex and the City 2

Shrek - not cosmopolitans - was what fans were buying this weekend.

Despite competition from two heavily-promoted features, an aging green ogre was able to hang on to his title for two weeks in a row. raised an additional $57 million during the Memorial Day frame to bring its domestic total to $146.8 million.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. proved that people can get tired of sex. Sex and the City 2 - which featured the return of Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) - couldn’t get past the bad reviews to even match the first film’s numbers. (Sex and the City opened to $56.8 million in May 2008.) The lovely ladies also couldn’t overpower Jake Gyllenhaal’s four-day haul. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time wound up snagging second place with a $37.8 million debut.

Sex and the City: Carrie Becomes a PC

Carrie Bradshaw’s Mac has become a staple of the character, as identifiable with as Manolo Blahniks. But all that’s going to change in the Sex sequel, where Carrie will become a PC. Hi, I’m astounded.

Carrie’s Mac became far more than a prop through the course of the six-season series. An entire episode (“My Motherboard, My Self”) was devoted to the device. It also played a large role in the two-part series finale, serving as a metaphor for Carrie’s true self. Now, all that’s being stripped away thanks to advertising agreements and (I suspect) studio interference.

Hewlett-Packard computers (and only HP computers) will be featured in the new movie. will also be featured in upcoming ads for the computer company. Carrie Bradshaw would never sell herself out for some extra movie-making money - remember how she flat-out rejected the Season 5 book cover mock-up? The switch is one that will be noticed only by die-hard Sexers, but it’s a jolting difference all the same.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Her 48 SATC2 Costumes

Carrie Bradshaw

Believe it or not, has 48 costume changes in Sex and the City 2.

The actress - who reprises her role as glamorous journalist in the movie sequel - admits she changed outfits so many times, more than 10 were lost to the cutting room floor.

“I think I have about 48. We started off with 60 and I think scenes were cut and scenes didn’t make it. So I think between scenes being cut prior to shooting and us not being able to find a good enough reason to change clothes on camera, which is what I would do if they would let me, I think we end up in high 40s.”

Cinema Scene: Kim Cattrall Gains Weight, 50 Cent Loses Tattoos

Kim Cattrall in Meet Monica Velour-Kim Cattrall said she had to gain 15 pounds to play a washed-up prostitute in Meet Monica Velour. Great - now 115 pounds is the new “washed-up” point.

-Speaking of Cattrall, advance tickets to Sex and the City 2 have already been selling like hotcakes. That movie doesn’t even open until May 27!

-Afraid True Blood‘s June 13th return won’t have enough “action” for you? Then maybe you should be checking out Tru: A XXX Parody. (The hilarious clip’s got language, no nudity.)

-Lindsay Lohan was cut from The Other Side because financiers didn’t deem her to be “bankable.” But did they take into account how cheap she probably is?

-50 Cent is working hard to get less noticed. The rapper/actor has started removing his tattoos to help his growing film career. What? Men don’t like makeup?
