This holiday weekend introduced a slew of big-ticket features in our cineplexes. It also brought us a wide cast of former Oscar-winners competing for our theater dollars. By Monday, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Johnny Depp, Hilary Swank and Oscar-nominee John C. Reilly had all made entries into the Top Ten - but it was Nicolas Cage who wound up striking gold.
National Treasure: Book of Secrets earned $45 million, an increase of $10 million over the 2004 original. This was the second hit for Cage this year, following the critically-panned Ghost Rider. In addition to having the weekend’s best gross, Secrets also had the best average of any movie over those three days. Although Charlie Wilson’s War‘s fourth place was respectable (especially for a politically-based film these days), its $3760 per screen take clearly set it apart from this week’s champ. In contrast, Juno earned an $11,184 average for an impressive 10th place finish.

‘Dewey Cox’: Your Best Holiday Movie Choice
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Columbia Pictures, Music, Satire, Comedy, New Releases
You could go to the theaters this holiday season and be inundated with biological fallout, CGI creatures that exist solely in fokelore, and lighthearted family comedies. Or, you could get real laughs without the holiday hooplah. You can walk hard with Dewey Cox.
A musical parody, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is already getting excellent reviews, all of which applaud the script’s funniness. The film follows Dewey through the decades as he tries to build his recording career. Music-themed biopics Walk the Line and Ray are both parodied in the film, which features its own fun soundtrack. Walk Hard will make audiences laugh hard, just what’s called for in a year filled with movies about war, death, and a wild-looking Dustin Hoffman pretending to be magical.

Britney Spears to Play the Virgin Mary?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Religious, Satire, Comedy, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases
US Magazine is reporting that Britney Spears may be taking on a very holy role in the near future. It seems a French producer has deemed the train wreck
pop star a perfect fit for his satirical take on the classic nativity story. In this modern-day version, Britney would play an unwed pregnant girl, named Mary, who gives birth on Christmas Eve in Bethlehem, Maryland.
Although the film is hers for the taking, Spears is still supposedly mulling over the offer. A decision on the role is expected to be made within the next few days. Production on Sweet Baby Jesus is scheduled to begin in March.

Entourage’s Kevin Dillon To Star in ‘300’ Spoof
Call it a humorous example of life imitating art. HBO star Kevin Dillon has just landed a big screen role in National Lampoon’s 301: The Legend of Awesomest Maximus Wallace Leonidas. The comedy will spoof a myriad of testosterone-laden movies including 300, Troy, Braveheart and Gladiator.
Fans of Entourage know that Dillon’s character (struggling actor Johnny Chase) rose to fame in the short-lived series, ‘Viking Quest’. (The tagline for the fake series being: “From the past… comes a warrior of the future.”) Now in 301, Dillon will get to add his special twist to the Spartan general role.
I’m really hoping the producers of Entourage can somehow find a way to tie in Dillon’s real life role into their show. The fans of Viking Quest would want them to do it for Johnny.
