Buck Rogers: Could Twiki be the one that makes us forget Wall-E? Frank Miller (300) is now aiming to tackle another period for his next big-screen adaptation. If Odd Lot Entertainment is able to secure the rights to Buck Rogers, Miller will write and direct a much “darker” version of the sci-fi tale. Rogers, which began comic serial back in the 1920s, told the story of a United States Army Air Corps officer who found himself in the 25th century long after an gas exposure incident. Buck has already been the subject of a radio program, a movie serial and a two television programs (including the NBC production starring Gil Gerard).

Trailer for The Day The Earth Stood Still
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Science Fiction, Trailers, Upcoming Releases
In The Day the Earth Stood Still, Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth with a robot companion. The two have a warning to deliver to the world’s leaders.
Those familiar with the 1951 original should know this remake will come with a slightly different message. In an interview with MTV, Reeves said, “The version I was just working on, instead of being man against man, it’s more about man against nature. My Klaatu says that if the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives. I’m a friend to the earth.”
Earth - also starring Jennifer Connelly, Jaden Smith and Jon Hamm - lands in theaters on December 12.

‘Cloverfield’ Ready for Big Box Office Debut
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Paramount, Horror, Thrillers, Box Office, New Releases
Scheduled to open January 18, the big-budget sci-fi thriller Cloverfield stands to make a box office killing. At least, that’s the hope. The Paramount release doesn’t have a lot of big-name stars, but teaser trailers have been running for months now and strong promotion generally creates ticket holders. Unique shooting techniques and hard-core action make Cloverfield compelling and serve to give viewers the feeling of being in the story - something that worked well for movies using similar techniques (like The Blair Witch Project).
The movie sets the stage by introducing all the characters while putting viewers right in the mix. One friend plans a journey to Japan to find his own identity and way in the world, as others make a tape for him so he can hold happy memories close. But Cloverfield is about no happy party - for soon enough, terror strikes. In this way, this film is very much like any other horror movie ever made.
What’s different about Cloverfield? Lots of money, slick production, and in-your-face glimpses of the monster give this film a polished feel often lacking in other horror flicks. The movie strives for a natural, authentic feeling sure to keep viewers right on the edge. And the monster, it’s said, is well worth the wait.

Box Office Breakdown: Jessica Alba Can’t Keep Audiences Awake
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Disney, MGM, Paramount, Warner Bros, Weinstein Company, Action, Adaptation, Animation, Drama, Family, Horror, Romance, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists, New Releases

There’s nothing like a good snub to restore your faith in moviegoers.
Although Awake was the only new wide release this past weekend, discerning audiences kept it from succeeding by default. (NOTE: Cute squirrels will always trump Jessica Alba.) The movie, also co-starring Star Wars’ Hayden Christensen, opened with a dismal $6 million - less than half of what Alba’s last stellar film, Good Luck Chuck, did. (The latter opened at $13.7 million.) I wonder if this currently makes Jessica Biel the most successful Jessica out there.
Aside from Awake’s entry, the rest of the Top Ten changed very little from last week. Enchanted refused to budge from its perch and earned another $16 million over the past three days. Meanwhile, Beowulf surged back up a notch, trading spots with holiday flick, This Christmas.
Although the box office numbers were unspectacular overall, we can expect big changes in just a few days; that’s when New Line’s The Golden Compass makes its debut.

‘1.18.08’ Officially Called ‘Cloverfield’
Posted by David Onda Categories: Paramount, Action, Adventure, Horror, Science Fiction, Thrillers, New Releases, Rumors, Trailers, Upcoming Releases
It has been a fiery topic among entertainment blogs and movie sites for months, and now the J.J. Abrams project previously known only by it’s release date - 1.18.08 - has finally got an official name: Cloverfield.
The Paramount film’s first trailer debuted prior to this summer’s smash-hit, Transformers, and has sparked speculation ever since. The rumors involved everything from the film’s poster and title to its plot and mysterious city-ravaging “monster.” And although many rumor mills figured out the film’s title some time ago, the second 1.18.08 trailer, which debuts this weekend before Paramount’s Beowulf, makes the sci-fi thriller’s title official.
But with another two minutes of footage to scrutinize, I’m sure the fanboys will find no shortage of more things to ask questions about.

‘X-Files’ Movie Slated for July 2008
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Science Fiction, Sequels, Upcoming Releases
July 25, 2008. That date will be personally significant to me but globally significant to sci-fi fans everywhere. Although my husband should be taking me out to dinner to celebrate our 4-year wedding anniversary, I sense that evening will be spent in a movie theater instead. After all—how often does an X-Files film come around?
After years of rumors and denials, what had been looking like a pipe dream is now becoming a reality. David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and creator Chris Carter have finally gotten their acts together and jointly committed to the long-awaited X-Files sequel. Production is scheduled to start in December in time for the Summer 2008 release date.
Although the cult series only ended in 2002, it has been a whopping ten years since Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were last seen on the big screen. While the new film is meant to be a ‘stand-alone’ feature, I suspect DVD rentals of the series and movie will spike sometime around June of next year. I know I could use a bit of refreshing myself; the only thing I remember about the first pic were the bees. Lots of them.

Good News for ‘Star Trek’ Fans
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Paramount, Science Fiction, Casting, Rumors, Upcoming Releases
Okay, I’ll admit it: I’m a Trekkie. I try not to take it to a dark place; I’ve never dressed up in costume or downloaded Enterprise schematics online. I do know what the ‘T’ stands for in James T. Kirk, and admit I’ve avidly watched every episode. Ever. So I, like many Star Trek fans out there, feel pretty stoked about the new movie. And more information is coming out of the galaxy every day. Eric Bana will play a villain in the flick, which is set for a Christmas 2008 release. So far, news on the film is good for Trek fans. Leonard Nimoy has given the film his approval, which is said to focus on Spock – and that all sounds very promising to Trekkies of all kinds.

Will Russell Crowe Join ‘Star Trek’ Film?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Science Fiction, Sequels, Casting, Rumors
According to the New York Post, Russell Crowe may be dismounting his horse and going sci-fi for his next venture.
If the reports are true, we could see the 3:10 to Yuma star boldly heading where no man has gone before in the latest Star Trek movie. The details of his role are vague, but he’s being courted to play the villain in the series’ 11th installment.
The film, currently starring Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as Spock and Anton Yelchin (Huff) as Chekov, is being directed by J.J. Abrams (Alias).
