Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:
Zach Galifianakis: The Hangover scene stealer has been invited to have Dinner for Schmucks. The comedy focuses on the “most pathetic” person to ever be included in a weekly dinner. Galifianakis will sit alongside Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in this Jay Roach-directed film.

Box Office Breakdown: Number 1 for District 9
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Disney, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Romance, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Box Office, Lists

District 9 may not have have any big name stars and it may not be based on a story everyone knows, but it does have something no other film has this Monday: a first place finish.
Over the weekend, the R-rated actioner landed on Earth safely with over $37 million in ticket sales. The sci-fi entry also raked in one of the best per screen averages ($12,251) of any film currently in in theaters. (Sony Pictures Classics’ It Might Get Loud averaged $13,240 while in limited release.)
In the non-alien department, The Time Traveler’s Wife cornered the romantic genre with an $18.6 million total. Meanwhile, Vanessa Hudgens proved she’s nothing without her better half. The Disney star’s new film, Bandslam, failed to even crack the Top Ten. The teen comedy barely managed to gross over $2 million.

Rogen and Gondry Find Their Kato
Posted by Kathleen Kane Categories: Columbia Pictures, Action, Adventure, Classics, Remakes, Casting, Upcoming Releases
Nearly a month after losing Stephen Chow, Green Hornet director Michel Gondry and crew have found someone to fill in the sidekick’s shoes: Asian pop star-turned actor Jay Chou.
And boy does he have shoes to fill out! “It’s an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee. I won’t try to be Bruce Lee’s Kato—I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part,” Chou said.
Even with Chou trying hard to bring his own style to the character, it may not be that difficult considering he’ll receive some help working from a script written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who doesn’t love what these two come up with?), based upon George W. Trendle’s series.
Speaking of co-stars, Rogen and Gondry seem to have no doubt about the decision: “Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog! When I filmed him next to Seth, they had such great chemistry,” Gondry said.
The film is scheduled for release next summer.

Box Office Breakdown: Audiences Drawn to Funny People
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Horror, Romance, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists

When you combine the talents of Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow, a 1st place finish shouldn’t shock you. A $22.7 million haul? That is surprising.
Despite earning enough to displace G-Force for the weekend’s top spot, Funny People failed to bring the movie house down. The 144-minute length dramedy pulled in the lowest gross for any #1 entry this summer. While the film did better than any of Sandler’s dramatic efforts, it didn’t fall line with his comedic outings.
On the other hand, Rogen and Apatow had more reason to be pleased with the box office results. The Universal pic gave Seth his best debut since 2007’s Superbad. Meanwhile, Funny fell right in between The 40-Year-Old Virgin ($21.4 million) and Knocked Up ($30.7 million) for Judd.

Seth Rogen Calls Katherine Heigl a Hypocrite
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip

If you thought Katherine Heigl was only alienating the people she works with in television, you’d be wrong. It seems the actress’ big mouth has irked her coworkers in film as well.
In a 2007 interview, the Knocked Up star gave a surprising interview to Vanity Fair about the Judd Apatow comedy. Instead of praise for her box office hit, Heigl called the film “a little sexist.” “It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a bitch; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you’re portraying women? Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie,” she stated.
Needless to say, her costars weren’t exactly thrilled by her comments.

Box Office Breakdown: Ben Stiller Defeats Christian Bale
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Religious, Romance, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists

Was it a result of Christian Bale’s rant? The presence of that other science fiction movie? Or the lack of family-friendly fare?
When the dust from the weekend settled, a surprising entry emerged as the winner. Despite the country’s current love for action sequels/prequels, a much calmer feature - Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian - was the choice for entertainment this holiday. Ben Stiller’s comedy follow-up raked in $70 million giving the actor his best live-action debut ever. Smithsonian also became the best PG-rated opener for Memorial Day.
Museum‘s victory meant a disappointing 2nd place finish for Terminator Salvation. Although the saga’s fourth installment earned more than T3‘s debut, its $51.9 million gross ($65.3 million since Thursday) put it nowhere near the estimated $200 million budget. The numbers did give director McG, though, his best premiere since 2000’s Charlie’s Angels.

Box Office Breakdown: Narrow Victory for Angels & Demons
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Disney, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Romance, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists

Angels & Demons was never as popular as The Da Vinci Code...and its big screen numbers reflected that.
Despite huge success with the overseas box office this weekend (the movie had the 10th best international open ever), the latest Ron Howard/Tom Hanks collaboration barely struck gold domestically. Over the last three days, Angels grossed $46.2 million—just enough for first place. Unfortunately, the Dan Brown adaptation only earned $3 million more than last week’s champ and over $30 million less than the previous installment.
Star Trek, in the meantime, continued on its warp speed pace. The second place finisher pulled in another $43 million and put itself within $3 million of Wolverine‘s overall total. (The Hugh Jackman film, this week’s #3, had a 7-day head start on the sci fi adventure.)
