Possible Strikeout for Soderbergh’s Moneyball

It looks like Moneyball may have struck out just days before its planned start.
Although production was set to begin on Monday, Columbia Pictures head Amy Pascal has placed the film in limited turnaround. This means the adaptation of Michael Lewis’ Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game might not be seen at all. Brad Pitt had been committed to play Billy Beane, the real-life baseball player turned Oakland A’s manager. The book told the story of Beane’s use of computer-based analysis - instead of a deep pocket book - to build a competitive baseball team.

Brad Pitt Named for Odyssey, Moneyball
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros, Adaptation, Drama, Science Fiction, Sports, Casting, Celeb News, Upcoming Releases,
If you thought a growing household would slow Brad Pitt down, you were wrong. The actor, who is currently filming Inglourious Basterds (previously spelled Inglorious Bastards) in Germany, just recently had his name attached to two more possible projects. (Keep in mind, Angelina will eventually be abandoning the children for Edwin A. Salt.)
According to Variety, Pitt may soon be following his work on Troy with another Homer adaptation. Brad - who played Achilles in the 2004 film - is currently in discussions to take on the Odysseus-like character in Warner Bros.’ update of The Odyssey. Sadly (for me), this role would not require the 44-year-old to sport any type of toga. It’s the studio’s intention to set the classic tale in outer space.

Scorcese and De Niro Reunite for Hoffa Project
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Paramount, Adaptation, Drama, Casting, Celeb News, Scripts, Upcoming Releases,
Paramount Pictures has just announced that Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese will be reteaming for another mob-related project. I Hear You Paint Houses, which is based on Charles Brandt book, will be their first collaboration since 1995’s Casino. The frequent partners have also worked together on such classics as Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino and Cape Fear.
In Houses, De Niro will play Frank “the Irishman” Sheeran, a man who reportedly helped kill Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. Sheeran, who passed away in 2003, admitted being involved in this murder (and a string of other contract hits) to Brandt prior to his death.
Writer Steven Zaillian - the man behind Schindler’s List, Gangs of New York and American Gangster - has been tasked with adapting the screenplay.

Honoring ‘Bobby Fischer’
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Paramount, Adaptation, Drama, Family, Home Entertainment,
Bobby Fischer, the world-renowned chess player, passed away Thursday at the age of 64. Fischer, best known for his win over Boris Spassky during the Cold War, died in Iceland due to kidney failure.
In honor of America’s champion, I would the love the opportunity to suggest a simply fantastic movie: Searching for Bobby Fischer. Although the 1993 film is not really about the chess master per se, it does provide great insight into one of the world’s most respected and dissected games.
Fischer, the directorial debut from screenwriter Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List), is a beautiful film about young boy who discovers he has a natural talent for the game. Wonderful performances include a then barely-known Joan Allen as a mother who wants her child to live a normal life, Joe Mantegna as a father who lives vicariously through his successful son, and Max Pomeranc as the overwhelmed prodigy who just wants to have fun playing chess.
