Will There Be a Departed Trilogy?

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing?
While we’ve grown accustomed to sequel news as of late (e.g. Indiana Jones, Rambo, Beverly Hills Cop), here’s something we haven’t heard a while: we might soon just see a follow-up to an actual Academy Award winner.
In interview with MTV, Mark Wahlberg confirms that Martin Scorsese (with screenwriter William Monahan) may be developing a sequel and a prequel for The Departed. While some may be surprised by this announcement, the idea is not completely far-fetched. The 2007 winner for Best Picture was a remake of Infernal Affairs, a Chinese movie that also spawned two other films.

Mel Gibson Plans Acting Return

After spending some time under the radar, Mel Gibson is apparently ready to make a return to acting.
Although Gibson has definitely been busy over the last several years, his primary focus has been on directorial work (Apocalypto, The Passion of the Christ). It’s actually been some time since Mel has placed himself in front of the camera. His last major motion pictures hit theaters back in 2002 (Signs, We Were Soldiers).
I’m sure the calculated time off also had something to do with the actor’s brush with the law. If he could manage to keep out of the limelight, people would eventually forget those anti-Semitic remarks. Right?

This Tuesday brings the release of some great titles, new and old. As expected, the studios are rolling out some Halloween-inspired classics, filled with zombies, vampires and serial killers; though sadly, only Blu-ray supporters seem to be taking advantage of the upcoming holiday.
HD DVD studios chose instead to use this week to re-release a bunch of titles that were previously only available in those obnoxious HD DVD/DVD Combo discs. You know, the $40 releases that were appealing to neither the HD owners nor the standard-definition owners? Those of you who rightly refused to make such a silly purchase can now have some great HD titles for a lower price, thanks to Warner Home Video coming to its senses. Any of the following films with an asterisk (*) in the title are the re-released versions.

FilmCrunch 021: Infernal Affairs DVD Review

Neil Estep reviews the DVD release of Infernal Affairs in this episode of FilmCrunch.
A cop goes undercover as a gangster while, simultaneously, a gangster infiltrates the police force, pretending to be a cop. These two sleeper agents live underground for a decade before a series of mistakes clues in all the wrong people as to what’s going on and each mole is ordered to root out the double agent—which in both cases happens to be themselves. Torn between conflicting father figures—an avuncular, paranoid gang boss and a morally comprised police superintendent—the two moles slowly feel the net tighten like an icy hand around their necks. Juggling identies, always one mistake from a bullet in their head, and seduced by the attractions of their cover identies, both men slowly unravel, battering themselves bloody against the bars of their own personal hells, while their souls ice over.

2007 Academy Award Nominations

Somewhere out there director Bill Condon is trying to wake up from a very bad dream…
Just less than 24 hours ago, I was just telling my cohort Neil Estep that Dreamgirls would be nominated for Best Picture. Thankfully, no money was involved. Apparently what I should have said was, “Given that the film won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical, I think it will probably earn the most nominations this year—but not be nominated for Best Picture.” My theory? The voters were so Dreamgirled-out by the time they got to that part of the ballot…
The biggest shocker of the day? Probably. But there were plenty others. And may I saw how excited I am! Here are some of the more notable additions/omissions from this morning:
- We have one less Leo DiCaprio nomination in the Best Actor Category (in Blood Diamond, out The Departed) making room for Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson. Woo hoo! Is it weird that I’m excited about this nomination…even though I’ve never seen the movie? But I’ve heard so much about it and have been waiting anxiously for the DVD to come out on on Feb. 13th. I just love it when underdogs are recognized. Could this be a surprise win ala Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry) or Adrian Brody (The Pianist)?

FilmCrunch 012: The Departed Review

Neil Estep and Veronica Santiago review one of the best movie releases of 2006, The Departed, starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Matt Damon.
To take down South Boston’s Irish Mafia, the police send in one of their own to infiltrate the underworld, not realizing the syndicate has done likewise in director Martin Scorsese’s crime thriller. While undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) curries favor with mob kingpin Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), career criminal Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) rises through the police ranks. But both sides soon discover there’s a mole among them.
