Box Office: Rio Trumps Scream Sequel
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: 20th Century Fox, FOCUS, Sony, Animation, Biopics, Family, Horror, Sequels, Box Office, New Releases

Bloody carnage just doesn’t compare to animated fun… at least, not this weekend. Rio soared to the top of the box office results, earning $40 million during its opening weekend to leave all the horror flicks and feelgood films in the dust (by more than $20 million).
Scream 4, the highly-anticipated and long-awaited sequel, opened in the number 2 position. The star-studded horror flick earned $19.3 million over the weekend, far below expectations. Hop fell to third place with its $11.2 million weekend take.
Soul Surfer is down to fourth place, earning $7.4 million, and Hanna fell to fifth with $7.3.

Universal Pictures recently purchased a $1 million action comedy script (working title: Most Wanted) which will star The Proposal‘s leading couple Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.
In the flick, Bullock will play a criminal who is being held in custody by U.S. Marshall Reynolds.
Sounds kinda cheesy, but with two great actors in the lead roles the flick just might work.

Ashton Kutcher may have more Twitter followers than Diddy and Russell Brand combined - but that achievement wasn’t reflected at the box office this weekend.
Despite pirating the first 13 minutes of Killers, Kutcher was unable to generate enough interest to earn more than third place. The film - Katherine Heigl’s first since leaving Grey’s Anatomy - only rounded up a mere $15.8 million. (In other words, Ashton got about $3 from each of his Tweeps.)

Box Office Breakdown: Theatergoers Choose Shrek Over Sex
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Disney, Fox Searchlight, Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Romance, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Box Office, Lists

Shrek - not cosmopolitans - was what fans were buying this weekend.
Despite competition from two heavily-promoted features, an aging green ogre was able to hang on to his title for two weeks in a row. Shrek Forever After raised an additional $57 million during the Memorial Day frame to bring its domestic total to $146.8 million.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. proved that people can get tired of sex. Sex and the City 2 - which featured the return of Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) - couldn’t get past the bad reviews to even match the first film’s numbers. (Sex and the City opened to $56.8 million in May 2008.) The lovely ladies also couldn’t overpower Jake Gyllenhaal’s four-day haul. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time wound up snagging second place with a $37.8 million debut.

Box Office Breakdown: MacGruber IS a Bomb
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Fox Searchlight, Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Family, Horror, Independent, Remakes, Romance, Sequels, Comedy, Box Office, Lists

Disappointment can come in all shapes and box office sizes.
Shrek Forever After may have earned nearly three times as much than its nearest competitor, but it wasn’t exactly a winner for Paramount or Dreamworks. The film, which grossed $70.8 million in ticket sales, become the first sequel in the Shrek franchise to open below the $100 million mark (and that’s with the help of higher 3-D prices). The comedy did, though, place fourth on the all-time animated debuts list behind Shrek the Third ($121.6 million), Shrek 2 ($108 million) and The Simpsons Movie ($74 million).
Meanwhile, it appears MacGruber will last just as long in theaters as he does in Will Forte’s sketches. Although the character is (supposedly) known for diffusing bombs, he actually helped deliver one this weekend. The latest Saturday Night Live-based comedy - also starring Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe - generated a mere $4 million this weekend. While that number seems (understandably) dismal, there is one positive thing to note: the film only cost approximately $10 million to make.

Box Office Breakdown: Iron Man Fights Off Robin Hood

Russell Crowe‘s excellent aim couldn’t keep Robert Downey Jr. off target.
Despite increased competition in its second week of release, Iron Man 2 remained firm at the box office. Paramount’s sequel generated another $52 million between Friday-Sunday and vaulted over the $200 million mark domestically.
Meanwhile, Robin Hood‘s arrow was sharp enough for a $36 million bounty, but a bit too dull for a first place finish. The film did, though, earn approximately $74 million in foreign dollars. That topped the $43.1 million overseas debut for 2000’s Gladiator - another Crowe/Ridley Scott production.

Little Fockers to explore death and divorce
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Universal, Sequels, Comedy, Upcoming Releases
Little Fockers will examine themes of death and divorce. The third movie in the comic franchise - starring Ben Stiller and Teri Polo - will focus on more serious topics, but writer John Hamburg promises to deal with them in a “really comic way”. He told IGN: “We’re catching up with these characters five years later and Pam and Greg have twins so they are dealing with that. And people are dealing with where they’re at in their lives, and themes of death and divorce and all these real things that as we get older, we start to think about, but in a really comic way.”
John also promised that Owen Wilson’s character Kevin Rawley will have an expanded role in the new film.

The Thing: Universal - apparently feeling the winter blast - has decided to redo the classic John Carpenter film. In the 1982 version, research teams in Antarctica are killed off by a shape-shifting alien. The reimaging, which will be directed by Matthijs Van Heijningen, will be based off the same source material as the Kurt Russell vehicle. Ron Moore, Battlestar Galactica‘s executive producer, is in charge of the script.
