Box Office Breakdown: ‘Riddick’ Fights to the Top, One Direction Falls

This summer has been good to Vin Diesel. His film Fast & Furious 6 dominated the box office in the beginning of the season, and now Riddick looks to rake in film-goers' cash in the tail end of it.

Earning $19 million secured the sci-fi thriller the top spot while Lee Daniels' The Butler remained at number two with $8.4 million. Instructions Not Included jumped one spot to number three with $8.1 million, bumping We're the Millers down to number four with $7.6 million. Planes stayed at number five with $4.1 million.

Box Office Breakdown: One Direction Film Claims Number One Spot

Oscar buzz-worthy dramas like Lee Daniels' The Butler are apparently no match for One Direction fans.

The concert documentary - which debuted this Labor Day weekend - took in $17 million, reducing Lee Daniels' The Butler to second place with $14.7 million. We're the Millers also dropped one place - from two to three - with $12.6 million in its fourth week while Planes also fell one spot to number four with $7.7 million. Instructions Not Included debuted in fifth place with $7.5 million.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Elysium’ Faces Off Against ‘Millers,’ ‘Planes’

Elysium

Despite falling in line with the sci-fi blockbuster theme this summer, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's Elysium - starring Matt Damon and Jodi Foster - barely pulled ahead of three other newcomers at the theaters this weekend.

Elysium secured the top spot with $30.4 million while the Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston comedy We're the Millers placed second with $26.5 million. The latest Pixar flick Planes debuted at third place with $22.5 million while the teenage action film Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters took in $14.6 million in its first week, taking number four at the box office. Last week's number one film, 2 Guns, fell four positions to number five this week with its $11.1 million take.
