Getting tired of seeing Zac Efron in musicals? Well, you’re not alone.

Although he had been previously set to star in a musical update of Footloose, Zac Efron has decided to set aside his dancing shoes. According to TheWrap, the 21-year-old bailed out of the movie fearing he’d be typecast. (Uhh - couldn’t he have figured that out before?).

Paramount chose to fast-track the film when Efron became attached to the project last fall. Unfortunately, Zac announced his departure just last week. (Production had been planned to start sometime this spring.) Because the actor was given script approval, a screenplay rewrite allowed him to take advantage of the exit clause.

Despite the setback, the studio issued a statement claiming they’ll go ahead with the update:

“Footloose is a project we’ve longed to see re-booted for a new generation. While Zac is no longer attached, we remain excited and committed to the collective brain trust of Kenny Ortega, Neil Meron and Craig Zaden, who will reinvigorate the franchise. Their fresh take on the film will undoubtedly be filled with the same kind of breakout performances that we’ve come to expect from them.”

No word yet as to whether the film will premiere in 2010 as previously scheduled.
