Box Office Breakdown: ‘Lone Survivor’ Defeats ‘Frozen,’ ‘Wolf’

Although Frozen made a triumphant journey to the top spot last weekend, the release of Mark Wahlberg's war drama Lone Survivor brought the animated film to its knees, relegating it to second place.

Lone Survivor gained the most with its wide release this week, bringing it from 38th place to the top with its $38.5 million while Frozen earned $15 million. Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street made it to third place - one spot up from last week - with $9 million. The Legend of Hercules bombed with its debut of $8.6 million, marking it at number four. American Hustle stayed put at number five with $8.6 million.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Frozen’ Reigns Over ‘Paranormal’ and ‘Hobbit’

After weeks at the box office under the shadow of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Frozen finally reached number one this weekend, despite the ambitious debut of the latest Paranormal Activity installment.

Frozen took in $19.5 million to earn its number one title while Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones placed number two in its first weekend with $18.3 million. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug fell two spots to number three with $15.6 million while The Wolf of Wall Street jumped from fifth to fourth place with $13.2 million. Lastly, American Hustle rounded out the top five with $12.4 million, having also jumped one spot from last weekend.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Wolf’ Is No Match for ‘The Hobbit’

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Despite the formidable opponent Scorsese's Oscar buzz-generating The Wolf of Wall Street appeared, it did not have enough pull to say The Lord of the Rings fans who flocked for the third consecutive week to see The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug remain at number one.

The sequel to last year's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey earned $29.8 million this week, while Frozen was bumped up one spot from last week to number two with $28.8 million. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues fell to number three with its $20.1 million draw, and American Hustle stayed put at number four with $19.5 million. The Wolf of Wall Street debuted at number five with $18.5 million.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Hobbit’ Sequel Victorious Over ‘Anchorman 2’

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

Athough much buzz was drummed up for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (not to mention all the appearances Will Ferrell made as Ron Burgundy for promotional purposes), it was not enough to overshadow the draw of the sequel to last year's The Hobbit.

The latest installment of the Lord of the Rings series took in $31.5 million, securing its second consecutive week at number one. Anchorman 2 took in a respectable $26.7 million in its debut weekend while Frozen fell one spot to number three with $19.6 million. After having been added to more than 2,500 theaters this weekend, American Hustle jumped from #15 to #4 with $19.1 million. Saving Mr. Banks also received quite a bit of help with an increased theater count, taking in $9.3 million to round out the top five.
