Despite several press conferences and comments that she would like to branch out into writing new things, J.K. Rowling has completed the first Harry Potter spinoff. So much for the integrity of writing.
The book – an illustrated collection of fairy stories – is The Tales of Beedle the Bard, and only seven copies will be printed. One will be auctioned for charity, the others given away as gifts. Rowling drew the illustrations in the book herself and provided the handwriting for five of its stories. The book is mentioned in Rowling’s last Harry novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

J. K. Rowling, author of the incredibly popular Harry Potter book series, has publicly stated several times that there will be seven books - and only seven books. Now, fans are trying to force her hand - and her keyboard. Thousands have signed a petition asking Rowling to continue the series, and Rowling herself admitted she would “never say never” to more Harry. Rowling has spent seventeen years writing the series, and says that Harry’s story will come to a complete end in the seventh installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Rowling said it is “unlikely” she will return to the world of Hogwarts on the page. Speculation about the seventh book, sales of which have already broken records though it has not yet hit the shelves, has run rampant. If title character Harry Potter does perish in the book, as many experts have predicted, the “Save Harry!” campaign could become a very moot point.

Fans won’t have to wait too much longer for more magical action with Harry, Hermoine, and Ron. As recently as last month, Potter author J. K. Rowling finished the seventh and final installment to the series. The last Harry book will be titled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and is scheduled for U.S. release on July 21, 2007. Handily, the much-anticipated fifth HP movie will come out just one week earlier, so fans will flock first to the cinemas to watch Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix before rushing to bookstores. The cast that fans have come to love from the first four movies will appear in the fifth. Daniel Radcliffe returns as Harry, Ralph Fiennes will play Lord Voldemort, Dumbledore will be portrayed by Michael Gambon, Hermoine will be played by Emma Watson, and Rupert Grant will delight us all again as Ron. Joining the cast this year will be Imelda Staunton as Delores Umbridge, a favorite HP villain. Incidentally, all of this happens in July – the same month that Harry celebrates his birthday. Coincidence?
