Harrison Ford Was Told He’d Never Be a Star

Harrison Ford was told by an unknown movie executive that he didn't have what it takes to make it in the industry at the start of his career.
The 71-year-old actor - whose career has spanned six decades and includes high profile roles in Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars trilogy - was told he didn't have the star quality to become successful after beginning his career as an extra in Dead Heat On A Merry Go Round.
"I was in a contract at Columbia Pictures for $150 a week which back then in those days was still only $150 a week. It was ridiculous. My first movie role was a bell boy, a bell man in a hotel. I delivered a note or a telegram or something to James Coburn and my lines were, 'Paging Mr. Jones, Mr Jones, paging Mr. Jones' and he raised his hand and I went over and said, 'Mr. Jones? Room 204?' and he said, 'Yes' and I gave him the note and that was my job," Harrison said, speaking to talk show host Conan O'Brien last night.

Meryl Streep Calls Male Execs Scared of Women

Oscar winner Meryl Streep says film studios are “shocked” when her films are popular.
The Julie and Julia star thinks that the industry is “scared” of making films that appeal to women because all the studio executives are men.
The 60-year-old actress said, “It’s always a shock to the studio when a film like Mamma Mia does well because men run the studios and live their own fantasies through them. It’s harder for a man to jump inside a woman character’s mind and imagine, ‘This could happen to me’. They see it and they understand that there is a market and it will make them an enormous amount of money. But we all respond to instinct, ands it’s their inner boy that jumps up and goes, ‘Yeah I wanna see another G.I. Joe!’”

What’s an actor-turned-big-time-director to do once he’s catapulted into major success, forced to take on a sequel without having been consulted about anything concerning the project? Rant about your bosses and their absurdity in your MySpace blog! At least, that’s the route Iron Man director Jon Favreau took.
Actively participating in a MySpace forum to appease film geeks’ questions, Favreau complains, “Neither Robert [Downey Jr.] nor I were consulted about this and we are both concerned about how realistic the date is. We owe it to the fans to have a great version of IM2 and, at this point, we would have less time to make it than the first one.”
