There apparently seems to be no stopping The Hunger Games! The futuristic film featuring teens battling to the death beat out both newcomers The Three Stooges and The Cabin in the Woods, taking in $21 million.
The long-awaited Three Stooges took second place with $17 million while the Joss Whedon-produced horror comedy The Cabin in the Woods pulled in $14 million over the weekend. Titanic 3D was bumped down one spot from last week's number 3 with $11.9 million while American Reunion rounds out the top 5 -- down 3 from last week -- with $10.4 million.

Josh Hutcherson’s Praise for Gary Ross

Josh Hutcherson can't imagine making a Hunger Games sequel without Gary Ross.
The director has ruled himself out of the running for Catching Fire, the follow up to the hugely successful first movie in the trilogy which tells the story of a futuristic world where teenagers are forced to fight to the death live on TV for entertainment but Josh admitted Gary is "100 per cent" his choice to direct: "Gary [Ross] is my guy, 100 per cent, through and through. He killed the first one. He absolutely knocked it out of the park. Everyone who worked with him loved him. Myself and Jennifer [Lawrence] and all of the other cast members loved him. I couldn't imagine making the movie without him. That's what I have to say about that."

Box Office Breakdown: American Reunion, Titanic No Match For Hunger Games

Although lightning may have struck twice at the box office for James Cameron, the same cannot be said of his film Titanic.
The hype surrounding The Hunger Games has been justified, considering the film has now maintained its number 1 position at the box office for three weeks in a row -- this week earning $33.5 million. The latest installment of the American Pie series, American Reunion, took in $21.5 million in its first week while Titanic 3D pulled in $17.4 million in its debut. Action film Wrath of the Titans was bumped down to fourth from its number 2 spot last week with $15 million while the Snow White adaptation Mirror, Mirror is down 2 spots from last week, landing fifth with $11 million.

As with what seems like any and every young adult novel-turned-film these days, The Hunger Games continues to rake in the cash at the box office, coming out on top again in its second week with $61.1 million.
Apparently more folks are willing to fork over the dough to see teens battling to the death over titan carnage, considering Wrath of the Titans debuted in second with $34.2 million -- nearly half of The Hunger Games' winnings. The Snow White film Mirror, Mirror debuted at third with $19 million while 21 Jump Street was bumped down two spots to fourth with $15 million. Finishing in fifth place with $8 million was Dr. Seuss' The Lorax.

In an unsprising turn of events, the much-anticipated film The Hunger Games has battled its way to the top of the box office this weekend, placing third among all time opening weekends (just behind The Dark Knight) with $152.5 million.
The action film -- based on the young adult novel of the same name -- pushed last week's number one movie, 21 Jump Street, to second place, having earned $21.3 million. The animated film Dr. Seuss' The Lorax came in third with $13.1 million while Disney's John Carter flop managed to take in $5 million, securing the number 4 spot. The NAVY Seal film The Act of Valor hung on to its number 5 spot with $2.1 million.

Gary Ross’ Hunger Games Sequel Plans

Gary Ross "intends" to make the next Hunger Games movie
The director of The Hunger Games has revealed that he is set to make the next film in the three part series written by Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire, because he has been asked to.
"I am attached to the next film and I'm intending to do it, I haven't had a chance to think about it yet. So many people ask me adaptation questions or 'Who's gonna play so-and-so?' I literally finished this movie Tuesday at midnight, I finished color timing, and then I went into the junket a day later, so it's not like I've had a chance to think about Catching Fire, but yeah it's my intention to do the next one. They've asked me to do so," he said.
Actor Liam Hemsworth, who plays Gale Hawthorne in the film, is very much looking forward to working with Gary for the follow-up:

Jennifer Lawrence ‘Carries’ Hunger Games Movie

Jennifer Lawrence singlehandedly "carries" the Hunger Games movie, according to producers.
The Winter's Bone actress stars as protagonist Katniss Everdeen in the movie which tells the story of teenagers in the future forced to compete to the death live on TV for entertainment, and producers Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik say the movie is anchored by Jennifer's strong performance.
"To have [Katniss] be strong, and smart and independent. That's what we had to get right. [Jennifer Lawrence] just brought all that with her amazing talent and incredible work ethic. She just brought the best and carried us all on her back," Jon explained to The Hollywood Reporter.
The pair also have high praise for director Gary Ross, explaining they needed to find a filmmaker who shared author Suzanne Collins' "honest" voice. "I felt that we needed to find a voice for the movie that was as honest as the voice in the book. You want to find that ethical voice that Suzanne Collins found. And that's very hard I think to pull off, but I think Gary really found a way to hit that right in the sweet spot. Katniss is a very three-dimensional character. You feel like you know her. And not every filmmaker could capture that voice and make sure that the storytelling came from character," Nina said.

Jennifer Lawrence: Hunger Games Stars Hotter than Twilight Actors

Jennifer Lawrence says her male Hunger Games co-stars are "hotter" than the Twilight Saga hunks.
The actress - who plays 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen in the eagerly anticipated novel adaptation of the Suzanne Collins trilogy - admitted Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner from the vampire film franchise are good looking but says her loyalties lie with her co-stars Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson.
Joking about a Twilight / Hunger Games feud, Jennifer told Access Hollywood, "Since the feud is now out in the open I'm going to have to go with our guys as hotter than the stars of Twilight. Obviously Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are gorgeous but I have to go with my boys."
