Box Office Breakdown: ‘Ender’ Beats ‘Bad Grandpa’

Ender's Game

Though last week's number one film, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, had movie-goers paying plenty of money for the laughs, newcomer Ender's Game was more appealing to them in this box office weekend.

The sci-fi film - Starring Harrison Ford - earned $27 million, pushing Bad Grandpa down to second place with its $20 million. Last Vegas and Free Birds also debuted this weekend, landing respectively at number three and four with $16.3 million and $15.8 million. Rounding out the top five was Gravity, which slipped three spots from its position at number two last week due to its $12.8 million take.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Grandpa’ Kicks Gravity Out of Top Spot

'Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa'

Gravity had a nice three weeks at number one, but the critically-acclaimed space film starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock was apparently no match for the latest Jackass film, Bad Grandpa.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa - which sees veteran Jackass-er Johnny Knoxville as the eponymous patriarch - debuted at number one this weekend with $32 million, which effectively left Gravity in the dust with its $20.1 million, which secured it a second place spot. Captain Phillips dropped one spot to number three with $11.6 million while the much-hyped The Counselor debuted at number four with $7.8 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 remained at number five with $6.2 million.

While Halloween might be only a week away from Thursday, movie-goers this weekend opted for the space film Gravity over the remake of Carrie and the sequel to Insidious, helping it maintain its top spot at the box office for the third consecutive week in a row.

Carrie (2013) and Escape Plan debuted respectively at number three and four with $16.1 million and $9.8 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 came in at number five - dropping two spots from last week - with $9.6 million.

Julianne Moore Confirmed for Carrie Remake

Julianne MooreJulianne Moore has been confirmed to star in a remake of Carrie.

The 51-year-old actress has signed up to play the titular character's abusive, fundamentalist Christian mother, Margaret White, in a reboot of the 1976 horror movie, which will see Dark Shadows actress Chloe Moretz take on the lead role. The Three Musketeers star Gabriella Wilde will portray Sue Snell in the film, which will see Kimberly Peirce direct with Kevin Misher producing, Deadline reports.

Julianne was offered the role of Margaret in March, while Chloe is thought to have beaten off competition from Dakota Fanning and Saorsie Ronan to play Carrie, an abused girl with psychic powers who experiences bullying troubles but gets pushed too far one night. Kimberley is thought to be using Stephen King's original book as an inspiration for the reboot, which could see a new take on the story.

The Carrie remake is scheduled for a March 15, 2013 release.

Chloe Moretz: Carrie Will be Dark and Psychological

Chloe MoretzChloe Moretz says the Carrie remake will be "darker and more psychological" than the original.

The Kick-Ass actress has signed up to play the titular role - a bullied schoolgirl who discovers she has psychic powers and uses them to cause havoc in her hometown - in the reboot of the 1976 horror film, and she revealed the movie will have similarities to 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan: "It's darker and much more psychological. More Black Swan. You're really looking into her mind and it really looks into the relationship of Margaret and Carrie. It's set in modern time, so it's a lot different," she said.

The 15-year-old actress confirmed the remake will be based on the Stephen King novel of the same name more than the previous motion picture - which starred Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, with Brian De Palma at the helm - even though she admits the film was "one of the best movies ever made."

New Sex and the City Trailer

Sex and the CityFinally - a more substantive glance at the upcoming Movie!

While I will undoubtedly watch the release, I must say the newest trailer gives the film a much darker tone than I would have liked to see.  (You can view it for yourself, after the jump.)  Is it because the show is best served on the small screen?  Should the series only be viewed in 30-minute snippets?  Is the teaser simply a bad representation?  (Oh, I hope so.)

Regardless, the clip does give us a few juicy tidbits:

  • Apparently Mr. Big’s (full) name is John James Preston.  (I think I like him better when he’s not an actual person.)
  • It looks like Steve may have cheated on Miranda.  (The Steve I know would never do something like that.)
  • Commitment-phobe Samantha may be wandering from Smith Jerrod.
  • Charlotte is indeed pregant.  (She adopted that kid for nothing.)
  • And last but not least, Carrie’s planned wedding to Big falls apart?

Be looking for SATC to hit theaters this May 30.

It begins with a voice-over and a wide, sweeping view of Manhattan, then quickly falls into an image free-for-all while the theme music blares invitingly. Quick screenshots flash past, showing images inside Carrie’s apartment, the four girls walking together, and a photo shoot where Carrie sports the much-touted wedding dress. As the music ends, the final scene shows a steamy kiss between Carrie and Mr. Big. All of it leads up to the promise that the movie will debut May of 2008.

Sexy Rumors for New Movie

Sex & the City cast Everyone’s dying to find out what’s going on with the Sex & the City movie, and insiders know it. The media has been doing their best to find pictures and information on the much-anticipated big-screen version of the popular HBO series, but they’re on to the game. There’s been a ton of buzz about recently-released photos depicting Carrie in a white wedding dress and Charlotte with a telltale tummy bump, but these pictures are meant to add fuel to the fire – not reveal any plot points. The pictures are part of dream sequences in the movie, and don’t have anything to do with the reality of the characters’ lives. One source suggests the pictures are meant to fool fans, showing them what they want to see to keep them from speculating on the actual script. When the series wrapped in 2004, head writer/executive producer/sometime director Michael Patrick King wrote several different endings to fool the press and the fans. If Sex insiders have their way, we won’t know anything until the film is released…and maybe that’s as it should be.
