David Cronenberg: ‘My Movies Are Irrelevant to Me’

A Dangerous MethodDavid Cronenberg feels his movies are "totally irrelevant" to him. The director - who is renowned for making films in the body horror genre, which explores people's fears of transformation - isn't worried if there are no links between any of his films because he sees them as standalone projects.

"The movies I have done are totally irrelevant to me - I don't worry about a connection because I'm making the movie and it will be there."

But in his latest directed movie A Dangerous Method - which tells the story of the intense relationship between psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and his psychoanalyst mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) - David thinks there is an association between the graphic nature of the motion picture and his other films: "You could say, well, Freud insisted on the reality of the human body at a time when people didn't want to know about the body and covered it up with many layers of clothes. Freud talked about penises and vaginas and anuses and excrement and child abuse and incest. That connects this movie to my other movies."

Brit Keira Knightley is the top contender for the role, according to gossip, though blonde bombshell Scarlett Johansson is also being considered. Producers are hoping to get Helen Mirren, who played the title role in The Queen, to play Diana’s mother Frances Shand Kydd.

Matt Damon Gets Tender With Keira Knightley

Matt DamonMatt Damon is set to star in a new period drama alongside Keira Knightley.

The star - who already has three movies in the pipeline this year - has reportedly been offered a role in the movie adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic Tender Is the Night, even though no director has been chosen yet by 20th Century Fox.

The 39-year-old actor would play a talented young doctor called Dick Diver who lives on the French Riviera in the 1920s with his wife Nicole. The movie, which so far has only a script written by David Nicchols, tells the tale of Dick as he goes through life, weighing up different issues in his mind such as his wife’s wealth.

The female lead has been offered to British actress Keira, who is said to be keen to star with the American star. Matt recently admitted he has such a busy schedule this year he doesn’t plan on taking any time off:

“I want to direct someday and I can’t really pass up the chance to work with the people I’m getting to work with. I’ve worked with Paul Greengrass three times now, and Clint Eastwood twice, and five or six times, and the Cohen Brothers this month. As long as that keeps happening, I can’t see myself taking time off, unless the work dried up.”

Tender Is the Night does not yet have a release date.

Ryan Phillippe Auditioning for Captain America

Ryan PhillippeMacGruber star recently confirmed to MTV News that he will be auditioning for the part of Steve Rogers, the lead role in The First Avenger: Captain America.

Ryan, however, faces stiff competition for the role. (Fantastic Four), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) and Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe) are also believed to be in contention.

A shortlist for the female lead of Golden Girl reportedly includes Keira Knightley, Emily Blunt and Alice Eve. Meanwhile, Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) has been cast as Captain America’s adversary, the Red Skull.

The film - which is being directed by The Wolfman filmmaker Joe Johnston - is scheduled for release in July 2011.

Johnny Depp to Get $35 Million for Pirates 4

Jack Sparrow collects his booty

While studio execs at Disney may forge ahead without Johnny Depp for the fifth and sixth Pirates of the Caribbean films, they’ll definitely be paying a hefty amount to have him in the latest sequel of the franchise.

Reportedly commanding a minimum of $35 million, Depp would shoot to the top of the highest-paid actors list, placing him above the likes of Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, and Mel Gibson, who ask for around $30 million (Depp received $25 million for the last Pirates sequel).

Yes, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have dominated at the box office; however, higher-ups usually aren’t known to shell out $35 million paychecks, so what gives?

Keira Knightley Aims For Fair Lady Role

Keira Knightley has her eyes set for the Fair Lady roleA fan of period pieces, Keira Knightley has been tipped to star in a new version of My Fair Lady.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actress is reportedly in negotiations to play Eliza Doolittle in Emma Thompson’s adaptation of the classic rags-to-riches tale.

Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson are also being considered for the role, which was originally played by Audrey Hepburn. An insider said, “Keira and Scarlett are the only two real contenders, and Keira’s the favorite. She’s the most natural Eliza people have seen. She has worked on her singing voice for a year and will get better and better.”

The film’s director Danny Boyle, who won an Academy Award for Slumdog Millionaire earlier this year, is also believed to want Keira to get the part.

The 24-year-old actress is said to be “scared” about taking on such an iconic role, but excited about the challenge it would present. Filming is expected to start late next year.

Madonna Wants Blanchett for Musical

Madonna wants Cate Blanchett to star in her musicalMadonna wants Cate Blanchett to star in her new musical—when the Queen of Pop wants you, is there even a chance of declining?

The “4 Minutes” singer is set to direct and produce Wallis, which follows the life of American socialite Wallis Simpson, who Britain’s King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry, and wants the Notes On A Scandal actress to take on the lead role opposite Doctor Who actor David Tennant after opting against casting Keira Knightley.

A source told Britain’s The Sun newspaper, “The final script is now written and the locations have been scouted. Madonna is now trying to assemble the cast and put the finances in place. The first scene of the film is an old woman in her 90s living on her own in a Parisian flat. She starts to tell her life story to her housekeeper. It turns out the old woman is Wallis Simpson. There will be a song for each decade of her life.”

Madonna, whose last acting role in a movie was in 2002 flop Swept Away, had been planning to start work on the film last year, but it was put on hold while she finalized her divorce from Guy Ritchie.
