Box Office Breakdown: Another Win for Final Destination

Ticket buyers ended their summer vacations by booking The Final Destination. For the 2nd time in a row, the horror entry topped all entries with a 1st place finish. Thanks to the $15.3 million added to the pot, Warner Bros. saw its sequel rise above the $50 million mark during the Labor Day weekend
Inglourious Basterds pulled in another $15 million and narrowly missed another win of its own. The WWII movie has now raked in over $95 million domestically and given Quentin Tarantino the 2nd best gross of his career. (Pulp Fiction is still the champ.)
Meanwhile, Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper joined forces for a 3rd place debut. All About Steve may not have done Proposal or Hangover-esque numbers, but the comedy did walk away with something to brag about. The Fox feature totaled the largest per screen average of any movie in the Top 10.

Box Office Breakdown: Final Destination Has Last Laugh

Theatergoers made The Final Destination the destination this weekend.
Even though it had no A-list names and was pitted against another horror film, the fourth Destination installment gave the franchise its best opening to date. The movie, which was boosted by 3D venues and pricing, grossed approximately $27.4 million since its Friday debut. Up until now, the series only saw openings under $20 million.
Warner Bros.’ win meant a loss for Halloween II. Rob Zombie’s latest splatter-flick scared up nearly $14 million less than 2007’s Halloween grossed. (This could be part of the reason why the director is being replaced for Halloween 3D.) Unfortunately, the $16.3 million take wasn’t even good enough for 2nd place. The sequel was actually topped by a different Weinstein Company film: Inglourious Basterds.

Box Office Breakdown: Glorious Outing for Inglourious Basterds

Inglourious Basterds, Inglorious Bastards. However you spell it, it was still a hit.
The WWII-era tale about a band of Jewish-American soldiers hit the mark this weekend with a $38 million debut. Basterds, which more than doubled its nearest competitor, gave Quentin Tarantino his biggest premiere ever. (Kill Bill, Vol. 2 grossed only $25.1 million in 2004.) The director also raked in his best international turnout to date.
Finding himself even further down the list was Tarantino buddy Robert Rodriguez. The director followed up Planet Terror with a $6.4 million outing for the PG-rated Shorts. That was enough to give the Warner Bros. feature a 6th place finish.

Box Office Breakdown: Number 1 for District 9

District 9 may not have have any big name stars and it may not be based on a story everyone knows, but it does have something no other film has this Monday: a first place finish.
Over the weekend, the R-rated actioner landed on Earth safely with over $37 million in ticket sales. The sci-fi entry also raked in one of the best per screen averages ($12,251) of any film currently in in theaters. (Sony Pictures Classics’ It Might Get Loud averaged $13,240 while in limited release.)
In the non-alien department, The Time Traveler’s Wife cornered the romantic genre with an $18.6 million total. Meanwhile, Vanessa Hudgens proved she’s nothing without her better half. The Disney star’s new film, Bandslam, failed to even crack the Top Ten. The teen comedy barely managed to gross over $2 million.

Box Office Breakdown: Transformers Rises Above the Competition

It’s not very often when “loud” and “mindless” are deemed good qualities. But in Paramount’s case, it was a recipe for success.
Over the past five days, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did what most films have been attempting all year: It passed the $200 million mark. (Up just became the first 2009 film to hit $250 million.)
While the Michael Bay film is definitely on track to be one of the most successful entries this year (let’s not forget about Harry Potter), the sequel’s opening still takes second behind last year’s topper. During its opening run, The Dark Knight earned $203.8 million domestically.

Box Office Breakdown: Audiences Agree on The Proposal

It seems a little skin might just go a long way.
After weeks of talking to the media about their joint nude scene, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds saw their movie take the top spot. Was it a coincidence? Maybe. Whatever the reason, The Proposal became the actress’ biggest opener ever. Prior to this weekend, 2007’s Premonition - a horrible film, btw - had Bullock’s largest debut. (That movie grossed $17.6 million, almost 1/2 less than the romantic comedy.)
Meanwhile, Reynolds is this week’s Bradley Cooper. Sandra’s leading man, like The Hangover star, has just had his second #1 film of the year. (The first being Wolverine.)

Box Office Breakdown: Hangover Hangs on for Another Win

This is one hangover that’s taking a while to recover from.
For the second week in a row, the must-see comedy of the summer has taken the top spot at the charts. The Hangover, which already had a greenlighted sequel prior to its debut, raked in another $32.7 million over the weekend. The film has now earned over $100 million and given Bradley Cooper his second #1 entry of the year. (His first was February’s He’s Just Not That Into You.)
Sitting in third place this week (right behind Up), was The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, a remake of a 1974 version starring starring Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw. The action thriller, which had Denzel Washington working with director Tony Scott for the fourth time, pulled in a respectable $23.3 million. Meanwhile, Imagine That, Eddie Murphy’s latest stinker, earned $5.5 million in wide release. That gross bests the premiere of Meet Dave by approximately $200,000.

First Look: Bana and McAdams in The Time Traveler’s Wife

Oh dear. If a two-minute trailer can get me teary-eyed…I doubt I could ever make it through the book.
Rachel McAdams, thanks to her performance in The Notebook, has already proven a talent for weepy romances. Now it looks as if she will do it again.
In The Time Traveler’s Wife, McAdams stars as Clare, the wife of a man with a rare genetic disorder. Eric Bana (Star Trek) plays Henry DeTamble, the husband who has no control over his random journeys. The story is based on the Audrey Niffenegger novel of the same name.
Look for the adaptation to unfold in theaters on August 14.
