Terry Gilliam: Avatar’s Success Hurts Other Filmmakers

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celeb News, Filmmaking,

Terry Gilliam has blasted Avatar for limiting the opportunities of less successful filmmakers.
The The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus director said James Cameron’s epic 3-D blockbuster - now the biggest grossing film in history - cost so much to make, it meant many other projects missed out on funding.
“There are so many small, beautiful filmmakers and actors and directors with so much potential that just can’t get a look in because the studios are pumping all their money into these huge projects,” Gilliam claimed. “There are such incredible lower-budget films that are magical, but we’ve got our work cut out with things like Avatar coming out. How are these young talents supposed to get a look in without the budget? That’s the sad thing, because they are just as good.”

First Look: Ledger in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Trailer

Is it possible that a trailer can make you feel giddy yet sad all at the same time?
In this trailer for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, we get to see Heath Ledger on the big screen for the final time. Although the project was put in limbo after the Oscar winner’s January 2008 death, the generosity of three fellow actors helped save the film.
Instead of scrapping the movie altogether, director Terry Gilliam (Brazil) recruited Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell for the adventure. The three men not only donated their time, they donated their fees to Matilda Ledger, Heath’s daughter.
Parnassus - also starring Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Verne Troyer and Lily Cole - opens on Oct. 16.

Winslet, Rourke Awarded with BAFTAs

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Awards,

While it’s looking pretty clear that Slumdog Millionaire will take home the Oscar later this month, the race for Best Actor and Best Actress remains a bit muddy.
At yesterday’s Orange British Academy Film Awards, Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Kate Winslet (The Reader) both took home the top honors for acting. Although this is similar to how they performed at the Golden Globes, neither actor was a winner at the recent SAG Awards. (Sean Penn and Meryl Streep took home the statues that evening.)

Actors Donate Paychecks to Heath Ledger’s Daughter

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Adventure, Casting, Celeb News, Upcoming Releases,
Back in February, it was announced that Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell would all be chipping in to complete Heath Ledger’s final project. Now we’re learning the trio had more than their fellow thespian in mind when they agreed to help. They were also thinking of Ledger’s daughter, Matilda.
Heath, who died of an accidental overdose back in January, had been working on The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus at the time of his passing. Although it was feared the magical movie would have to be scrapped, director Terry Gilliam was able to have other actors play different versions of Tim, Ledger’s character.
According to Gilliam, the generosity of the fill-ins extended beyond the film’s set. Out of concern for 2-year-old Matilda, the three fathers donated their paychecks to young girl.

Will Depp, Farrell and Law Fill in for Ledger?

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Adventure, Independent, Casting, Obituaries, Rumors, Upcoming Releases,
A few weeks ago, we said there was a chance Heath Ledger’s last project might still go forward. Director Terry Gilliam - who also worked with Ledger on 2005’s The Brothers Grimm - was doing his best to rework the uncompleted film.
Now a new report claims that Heath (and Terry) may be getting a little help from a group of friends. According to Ain’t It Cool News, Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp will all be helping to fill the gaps in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
Parnassus revolves around a theater troupe and their magical mirror. Audiences members are magically taken through the mirror to have their imaginations explored.

This Week on HD DVD and Blu-ray: January 29, 2008

Posted by Johnny Mercedes Categories: Sony, Warner Bros, Adaptation, Classics, Drama, Foreign, Music, Musicals, Religious, Satire, Comedy, Thrillers, Home Entertainment, New Releases,
Happy Tuesday, all!
The big news this week is the release of Monty Python’s Life of Brian on Blu-ray. The classic film, walking the hyper-sensitive line between important social issues and side-splitting comedy, is easily one of the best from the Python team, and should have a place on every movie lover’s shelf. Why not own it in gorgeous 1080p resolution and Dolby 5.1 surround sound? The harmless religious satire is that much better.
On a side note, am I crazy, or has Warner started consistently releasing films on HD DVD weeks later than those released on Blu-ray? For instance, this week’s Blu-ray release, The Invasion, won’t come out on HD DVD until February 19. And it’s not this one time either—the list of upcoming titles from High-Def Digest shows a serious lag in Warner HD DVD releases. I realize that Warner is phasing the format out, but have they officially put HD DVD on the back burner?
Check out the full list of high-def releases after the jump.

Heath Ledger’s Last Project May Continue

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Adventure, Independent, Filmmaking, Obituaries, Upcoming Releases,
Heath Ledger’s death left many questions unanswered. Although we may know the answer to one of those in just a matter of days, other matters - like the status of his last film project - are still up in the air. While the execs behind The Dark Knight work furiously to redesign their marketing campaign - how can they create hype about a movie that’s largely about the The Joker? - the creators behind The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus are simply trying to keep their movie alive.
Production on Parnasssus - a film about a traveling theater troupe and its magical mirror - had been shut down since news broke last week. (Ledger had been working on that film just days prior to his death.) Even though the $30 million pic may have to be scrapped altogether, co-star Christopher Plummer says there is hope the movie will still carry on. According to Plummer, director Terry Gilliam is doing everything he can to work around Ledger’s absence. The actor told People that “because the film deals with magic, there is a way, perhaps, of turning Heath into other people and then, using stills and I think they call it CGI…”
